Some stories ask to be written. Others knock at your heart until you let them out. The Girl that Ran Away from Home began as a whisper, sparked by the real-life courage of my sister, Winnie Msachi, who defied all expectations to become a pilot. Watching her soar transformed something in me. I wanted to tell a story that echoed
her bravery, a story for every girl who’s been told “no” and still chose to run toward her “yes.” Mayamiko’s journey is fictional, but her spirit is not. She is shaped by the dreams of many girls across Africa, girls who fight to be more than what their circumstances allow. Then there are stories that we choose to tell, and then there
are stories that choose us. What the Eye Cannot See was born from a conversation, a friendship, and a pain that runs deeper than words. My good friend, Gladwell Phiri, shared with me a chapter of his life that left me both shaken and moved: the story of his younger brother, Eneya, who lost his battle with Rhabdomyosarcoma cancer  It was a story of love, of courage, of struggle, and of quiet strength that endured even when the world around them seemed to be falling apart. In this story, Eneya is represented by Mphatso, a boy full of light, laughter, and promise. Through his character, I tried to preserve what illness could not take his soul. His spirit and his
laughter that lives on.
