Set in an imaginary new town of Ilmorog along the Trans-Africa Highway, Petals of Blood is Ngũgĩ’s vivid examination of the transforming society against a background of social forces: the changing balance of social forces in the village under a new capitalism; the history of past struggles against colonial domination and oppression; and people’s continuing striving against a more severe and deadly exploitation by an alliance of foreigners and class of newly-propertied Africans.
